Why Smoking Causes Bad Breath And Other Dental Problems

by Gregg Hall

No body wants to have bad breath but often times smokers to have bad breath and cannot get rid of it. A common effect that smoking has is that it causes bad breath as well as other dental problems. There are several reasons why smoking causes problems with your breath and oral hygiene.

The main reason for bad breath when smoking is found to be caused by the chemicals found in cigarettes. These chemicals build up in your mouth. The tar and nicotine from your cigarettes are deposited in your mouth. Chemicals can stick to places like the teeth, gums, tongue and side of the cheeks. This causes smoker's breath to form.

One of the major results of the chemicals in the cigarettes is that it allows bacteria to form in your mouth. Once bacteria are introduced into your mouth they will stay in your mouth until you get rid of them. Your mouth is a constantly we environment that bacteria thrive on. When they stay on your mouth's surface, it allows the bacteria to stick to certain places, giving them a place to thrive.

Another reason why smoking causes bad breath, is because it dries out your mouth. This stops the saliva from continuously flowing and cleansing out your mouth. This is what causes the growth of certain types of bacteria in your mouth, which then lead to a continuous odor on your breath. Because the saliva is not able to move as freely, it can't clean out the bacteria that move through your mouth. These same parts of smoking also cause cavities and yellowing of teeth to form easier. It raises the temperature in your mouth. This causes oral tissue cells to be damaged and killed. These will then not be able to protect the mouth efficiently, causing the bacteria to be able to move into the mouth easier. This may eventually lead to more serious problems with your oral hygiene.

More serious problems with smoking and dental hygiene may include gum disease and oral cancer. The tobacco that moves into your system causes your immune system to limit how it can fight infection. It also stops the growing of blood vessels.

The easiest way to get over your bad breath is quitting smoking. You and everyone around you will breathe easier. If you are not able to totally quit smoking, just lessening your cigarette intake everyday will go a long way to increasing your health and your breath. It may be difficult to totally quit smoking but in the long run quitting smoking is a good idea for you and your family.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida.
Why You Shouldn't Smoke If You Are Pregnant

by Gregg Hall

According to research, people who smoke while taking oral contraceptives have a higher risk of acquiring cardiovascular diseases. The fertility rate of female smokers is 72% while Male smokers have 50% fertility rate. The chemicals in the tobacco also cause the fluid in the cervix to become toxic, causing the sperm to die faster so that it is difficult to get pregnant.

Did you know that your pulse rate and blood pressure alters when you smoke? It is only after 20 minutes, then it returns to normal.

If you are pregnant, or you already have a baby, and you still smoke, you are putting both your health and your baby's health at risk. Studies show that the baby is strongly affected by the nicotine the mother gets from smoking. The nicotine that enters the body travels through the bloodstream and whatever travels through the bloodstream reaches the baby inside the mother's womb. This situation could result in low birth weight, premature delivery, miscarriage and, sometimes, death of the baby.

Babies who have a mother or father who smoke are more prone to bronchitis, asthma and pneumonia. This is because they are exposed to smokers more often. Passive smoke can cause a lot of health problems for the baby.

It is not easy to quit smoking, but it is better if you decide to quit smoking now for the future of your baby. You are not only hurting your baby by smoking while you are pregnant but you will also be causing severe harm to their still developing lungs after they are born by smoking around them. You may as well quit before you even try to get pregnant.

If you quit smoking, the carbon dioxide and nicotine will be eliminated from your system and then you will regain your strength and your blood circulation will improve. You also reduce the risk of getting lung cancer as well.

You should also consider your appearance. Smoking speeds up aging and it makes you smell bad. It is also costly. Imagine how much money you can save if you quit smoking? I have no idea what cigarettes cost where you live but where I am they are nearly $4.00 per pack.

You should also seek support from your family and friends who do not smoke. You can also join support groups in your community or online. The American Lung Association, the American Cancer Society and your health insurance are some of the associations where you can get information about support groups to help you end this noxious habit.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida.
